In fact, Rubiix was nominated as a finalist for Boutique Firm Of The Year, and one of our current graduates Huong Lisner was nominated for Accounting Student Of The Year. We are so appreciate of these awards, recognising leading firms and professionals driving the Australian accounting industry.
Today, we chat with Huong Lisner on her experience with the Accounting Awards, her academic journey and challenges as a student, and what it’s like to be a graduate accountant in a thriving industry.
Huong Lisner: Thank you so much! When I first heard the news, I was ecstatic and deeply honored. It felt like a validation of all the hard work and dedication I’ve put into my journey. The Awards Night was an incredible experience, filled with inspiring stories and remarkable individuals. It was a moment of reflection on how far I’ve come and a source of motivation to continue striving for excellence in the accounting field.
Huong Lisner: My academic journey in accounting began with a deep fascination for numbers and financial systems. I completed my accounting degree with a strong desire to make a difference in the business world. However, life took an exciting turn when I decided to open a restaurant, which I successfully ran for four years. The birth of my daughter brought new priorities, and I sold the business to focus on my family and reignite my passion for accounting. This journey has been driven by a love for both family and the analytical challenges that accounting presents.
Huong Lisner: Balancing my CA studies while working full time and being a new mother, are significant challenges. Time management and prioritisation became crucial skills. I overcame these challenges by staying super organised and maintaining a clear focus on my goals. As a graduate, transitioning back into the accounting field required updating my knowledge and skills, which I did through continuous learning and professional development.
Huong Lisner: Starting from an entry-level position and advancing to a graduate role within just 10 months at Rubiix is an achievement I am proud of. This rapid progression was a testament to my hard work, dedication, and passion for accounting. Being recognised by the Australian Accounting Awards for my contributions was the icing on the cake. It reinforced the idea that perseverance and a commitment to excellence truly pay off. This experience has fuelled my motivation to continue pushing boundaries and striving for success in my accounting career.
Huong Lisner: What sets me apart is my unique journey and diverse experiences. Running a successful restaurant taught me invaluable lessons in business management, customer service, and financial oversight. These experiences, combined with my academic background in accounting, give me a well-rounded perspective. My resilience, adaptability, and continuous pursuit of excellence have been key factors in my nomination as a finalist.
Huong Lisner: Staying updated with the latest trends and developments is essential in the accounting industry. I regularly read industry journals, follow thought leaders on social media, and participate in webinars and workshops. Being a member of professional accounting organisations provides access to valuable resources and networking opportunities. Additionally, I prioritize continuous professional development through courses and certifications to ensure my skills remain current and relevant.
Huong Lisner: My career aspirations include becoming a CA and eventually taking on a leadership role within a reputable accounting firm. I am particularly interested in forensic accounting, as it aligns with my passion for uncovering financial discrepancies and ensuring ethical practices. To achieve these goals, I plan to continue my education, gain diverse experiences across different sectors, and build a strong professional network. Balancing my career ambitions with quality time for my family is a priority, and I am committed to finding that balance through careful planning and support from my loved ones.
